Rules: The car/truck had to be sold brand new in 1997.
One of the last truly crazy V12 Lamborghini’s the VT was a rear engine 500hp monster. As much as I love the Murcielago and the Countach the Diablo has a great blend of the Countach crazy and the Murcielago performance/refinement. I know super cars are a little bit unimaginative of a choice but this is the car for me.
What would you buy in 1997?

Obvious answer is obvious. 1997 Dodge T Rex. 11 out of 10 on the BRO scale

1997 DeVille.

I don’t know why, but the late model Paseo really appeals to me.
It’s kinda like if Toyota tried to make a CRX, but failed in almost every way. Still cool though.

Unfamiliar with it but since TVR I awesome it is crazy

I owned a ‘97 SHO, but looking back I’d probably have one of these:

It does look cool. A little vanilla but cool vanilla
![]() 02/24/2016 at 12:17 |

I’d take a 1997 911 GT1 Strabenversion.
If not, then a 1997 Porsche 911 GT2.
![]() 02/24/2016 at 12:18 |
|
Yeah never cared for that generation M5 but it is no doubt a great car
![]() 02/24/2016 at 12:18 |

Good ol’ C5. This was the first year for them as the C4 bowed out in ‘96.
![]() 02/24/2016 at 12:18 |

I would have chosen the Fleetwood but it was discountinued in ‘96.
![]() 02/24/2016 at 12:18 |

One of the better Ferrari 2+2s

I never cared for the wheels on the 97
![]() 02/24/2016 at 12:20 |

I would have picked the coupe DeVille myself. I liked the lines of that car
![]() 02/24/2016 at 12:20 |
|
They’re not the best. But, I do like the coupe body style the most.
![]() 02/24/2016 at 12:20 |
|
They’ll need to produce a few more to test that theory.
![]() 02/24/2016 at 12:20 |

Best TVR ever.
5:05 in watch it destroy everything.
Seriously the slowest Cerbera makes a mockery of the established powers. I’m so glad TVR are back.

This, preferably in dark green, dark blue or burgundy.

1997 Lincoln Mark VIII LSC
Smooooooth looks and great power
![]() 02/24/2016 at 12:21 |
|
Oh this is THAT TVR. Impressive
![]() 02/24/2016 at 12:22 |
|
Good choice. I like the Mark VIII. The interior was a cool dash layout I always though and the highway self leveling suspicion was a neat trick
![]() 02/24/2016 at 12:22 |
|
Yeah, it’s like a sporty Tercel, with a sunroof and white gauges!!!!!!!!
Also, that Focus wagon is nice too
![]() 02/24/2016 at 12:23 |

Ram V10. Always wanted one.
![]() 02/24/2016 at 12:23 |

I almost said this because first year of C5.

1997 Miata M-edition. The last of the M editions, and the last NA special edition with a Torsen diff.

Since MontegoMan already put down the Mark VIII, I’m gonna say a longcab Splash.
Because it was the 90s, man.
![]() 02/24/2016 at 12:28 |

A 318ti with the canvas sunroof. I don’t think the shoe was out yet (came in 98). I like the first-gen SLK also, and manual transmisison was offered for the 98 model year, which went on sale in 97.
The Prelude SH is kinda cool, if you can get one that doesn;t burn oil like crazy. The 98 Accord EX-L sedan (which was released in 97), fully loaded with leather, sunroof, and manual transmission. Integra GSR’s get stolen too much to be enjoyable, otherwise I’d choose a GSR 4-door. S14's were still available in 97 also.
So many good choices!!!!
I know there’s no Toyota on my list, but 97 was more or less the beginning of the end for them, when they no longer were what they were for the preceding 5 years, being absolutely at the top.
![]() 02/24/2016 at 12:28 |
|
Cool choice. Never would have thought about that
![]() 02/24/2016 at 12:29 |

Love the NSX
![]() 02/24/2016 at 12:30 |

Good pick. The Ranger was supposedly better than the S10 form the era
![]() 02/24/2016 at 12:30 |

Toyota celica gt-four
Why? Because rally car
![]() 02/24/2016 at 12:30 |

Thing is, I was just out of law school with a great new job. I could have bought a slightly used one. Thought also of a Saab convertible. Hindsight ...
![]() 02/24/2016 at 12:33 |

I looked at a rust-free one before I got the Audi. White with tan interior. The response I got was basically, “why the hell do you need an HD pickup?”, plus I realized that a) it was silly and pointless, b) it was a pain in the ass to live with, and c) it’s not really “me”. It’s not my favorite car from ‘97, but it will make a diverse addition to this 100 year garage.
![]() 02/24/2016 at 12:33 |
|
So I guess I don’t follow? You pick the 97 Accord?
![]() 02/24/2016 at 12:33 |

I was smitten ever since I saw the colour and the polished Enkeis.
![]() 02/24/2016 at 12:34 |

Agreed on the prices. I feel like the pricing bubble around classic Porsches in general is close to bursting,
![]() 02/24/2016 at 12:34 |

X308 XJR.
![]() 02/24/2016 at 12:36 |
|
Very cool. I never thought of that
![]() 02/24/2016 at 12:36 |
|
Mostly, I like the stepside bed, I like the wheels, supercab option, 4WD available (and the 2WD were lowered), and it has the pushrod 4.0 with a five-speed available for the auto. Also, I had a toy R/C Splash in yellow which may be affecting my choice some. Okay, a lot.
![]() 02/24/2016 at 12:36 |
|
98 Accord
![]() 02/24/2016 at 12:37 |
|
Hindsight is certainly 20/20
![]() 02/24/2016 at 12:38 |
|
Since the Multipla was still two years away in ‘97: Coupé Turbo
Fuck you ‘98 had the Turbo Plus with all the good stuff from the LE (also from ‘98) that did 155mph.
![]() 02/24/2016 at 12:38 |
|
Yeah that is the thing when looking at this over 100 years diversity is key. And while not the best choice always something unique and different adds to the overall fictional variety.
![]() 02/24/2016 at 12:39 |
|
I hope so! Maybe I can buy one then!
![]() 02/24/2016 at 12:39 |
|
Nice choice. Always gotta love a Jag
![]() 02/24/2016 at 12:40 |
|
I know what you mean! Nostalgia certainly drives the choice occasionally
![]() 02/24/2016 at 12:41 |
|
Well then when I do 98 you can pick it then!
![]() 02/24/2016 at 12:42 |
|
The only correct answer is the McLaren F1.
![]() 02/24/2016 at 12:42 |
|
It’s a good pick on its own merits, so I can’t apologize.
![]() 02/24/2016 at 12:43 |
|
Very true. The F1 is a legend
![]() 02/24/2016 at 12:44 |
|
Yeah. As I said a while ago, it wasn’t until you pointed out that I realized this was supposed to be one “collection”. I was going at it as “If you were transported bad to *insert year* and could have an unlimited budget, what would be your car?
For that question, in ‘97, I’d have a Bentley Turbo RT.
![]() 02/24/2016 at 12:46 |
|
Oh that is also a very good pick
![]() 02/24/2016 at 12:47 |

I so would if they were legal here.

2.7, 4x4 and 5 speed please.

I believe you spelled Jag wrong. I’m pretty sure its Jaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaag.
![]() 02/24/2016 at 12:52 |

Another acceptable answer.

![]() 02/24/2016 at 13:10 |
|
Why would you do that to yourself?
![]() 02/24/2016 at 13:11 |
|
This or the Porsche. I think the Porsche but this is a good answer. Best sports sedan of the era
![]() 02/24/2016 at 13:11 |
|
In yellow and then I agree
![]() 02/24/2016 at 13:12 |

So pretty
![]() 02/24/2016 at 13:12 |
|
Nice choice. First year too!
![]() 02/24/2016 at 13:14 |
|
They were a lot better than people “remember” them to be. And they made fantastic budget racers.
![]() 02/24/2016 at 13:17 |
|
Ugh I had to drive one for driving school and hated every minute. But to each their own
![]() 02/24/2016 at 13:20 |

I WONT PICK A CAR TWICE YOU KNOW.
I got standards.
![]() 02/24/2016 at 13:29 |

Easy-peasy. McLaren F1, made new until 1999. Unfortunately the LM version was only made in 1995, otherwise that’d be the answer.
![]() 02/24/2016 at 13:52 |
|
Renault Sport Spider. I like Renaults and this is the sportest spiderest car they made. Never been in one, but they sure look like fun.
![]() 02/24/2016 at 13:52 |
|
As you should not.
![]() 02/24/2016 at 13:52 |

One of the best cars of all time
![]() 02/24/2016 at 13:53 |

That is awesome! I would love to have one

A 1997 Dodge Viper GTS. The coupe body has aged so well.
![]() 02/24/2016 at 14:05 |

Nissan Skyline GTR
Yes, a R33. I must be one of the few to like them.
Or if US only a Gray Viper with white stripes.
![]() 02/24/2016 at 14:05 |

I know a guy who’s had one since new. Never hauled more than a set of golf clubs. It’s still stock and mint.
![]() 02/24/2016 at 14:07 |

30th Anniversary Edition Camaro Z-28.
I’m a sucker for the hounds tooth seats.
![]() 02/24/2016 at 14:14 |

Nismo 400R. 44 produced, the ultimate R33 GTR with a 2.8L RB-X GT2 engine producing 400hp and other Nismo LeMans-grade racing parts carried directly over from the R33 GT-R LM program.
![]() 02/24/2016 at 14:33 |

As cool as the McClaren is, the car that has aged best of that generation in my opinion is the 911 GT2. Look at that thing. And if —this is a big if— it didn’t already kill you, you could probably sell it for north of $250K

Mandatory Diablo star given.
